2020-2022 Season Summaries
2020-2021;
These two years fell victim to the Covid era of restrictions with no outrigger regatta or distance events. The 2020 IVF World Sprints scheduled for Hilo was also cancelled. In 2021 with vaccinations available and cases subsiding, most Anuenue paddlers resumed paddling as usual.
2022:
With Covid concerns diminishing, the year saw the resumption of preseason, regatta and non-Moloka’i races. Anuenue regatta participation featured usually five men’s and women’s crews. The best finishers were the women’s open four with one third and also the open mixed crew with also a third. States were held at Ke’ehi lagoon with the women’s open four qualifying and finishing ninth in their event.
One of the highlights of the paddling year was the 2024 World Sprints that did take place as planned in Windsor, England at Lake Dorney, the venue for the 2012 Olympic rowing competition. Our club entries included V1, V6, and V12 75s and 80s paddlers. Top finishers were the 80s crew with two gold medals.
2019 Season Summary
Regatta:
Once again the primary representatives of Anuenue were the men’s 40s and the men’s 70s. The 40s crew’s finished ranged from 3rd to 5th in the 6 regattas. The 70s were consistent second place finishers in the first four season regattas and moved up to first over rival Outrigger in the last two races. States on Kauai was affected by a record amount of rain and flooding with some clubs electing not to participate. The 70s crew qualified and decided to race, finishing third in their event.
Distance:
Preparing for Moloka’i, Anuenue’s 40s crew raced in both the Duke race and the Henry Ayau race. The Moloka’i race itself resulted in another Shell Va’a victory while our 40s crew finished fifth in their division in 6:23:55 and 57th out of 89 crews. After an amazing 61-year record of consecutive crossings, Nappy decided the time had come to sit this race out.

Distance 2017
Ānuenue was able to enter crews in the majority of the distance events leading up to Molokaʻi this year. Overall participation was a step forward compared to 2016 thanks to some new paddlers and the work of the coaches especially Brian Yee.
The menʻs 40s were the most competitive overall and topped off their year with a strong Molokaʻi race celebrating Nappyʻs 60th crossing. (46/101 in 5:50:46).
Other results:
Duke race: Women: 50s second place: Men: 40s 4/7 and 27/28 open for second crew.
Dad Center: 50s: 4/4
Kailua Iron Challenge: 40s: 2/3
E Lau Hoe: Open 41/42
Kona: 65+ men: 3rd place.
Na Wahine O Ke Kai: 54/59 in 7:16:05
Molokaʻi Hoe: Red Bull (4:50:01) with the help of five EDT paddlers edged Shell Vaʻa (4:50:32) by 31 seconds in a very tight race. It was the first time a Hawaiʻi based crew had won the event since Lanikai in 2005. Red Bull led for the majority of the race and survived a near huli close to the finish for the victory. Shell had taken the lead off Hawaii Kai and the Lighthouse but Red Bull regained the lead off Waikiki in a stirring battle. Steered by Nappy, the 40s had a very good race finishing sixth in a competitive division while the second crew finished in 6:29:52 (86/101).
Red Bull celebrates after knocking off perennial winner Shell Vaʻa.
